After all the males of the Cordona pack are mysteriously killed, Ana Cordona becomes the new Alpha but making things even more difficult for her is Taggart, the alpha of the neighboring pack who wants the Cordona lands and Ana for himself. Just when things are looking bad for Ana, Connor Armstrong, an old flame comes back into her life with an offer of protection. Complicating matters even further is a human threat to Ana’s pack that could end up eliminating the shifters once and for all.

Alpha Instinct is a great start to a paranormal series, it had everything I needed to get addicted and left out the over the top complexity that would have been a turn off. Katie Reus’ shifters might be a mostly male dominated society but that didn’t mean that the females were slouches. Ana managed to keep her pack together for quite some time before Connor showed up to help and even when he did assume the role of pack Alpha it didn’t mean that Ana just threw herself at him and let him solve all her problems, she insisted on being part of the decision making process and demanded Connor’s respect because she was an Alpha too.

That’s where a lot of their conflict came from though. Connor wanted to show Ana that he was different than when she first met him and that he was capable of protecting her and her pack that he often bulldozed right over her in the mule headed male way which of course didn’t sit well with Ana. Connor’s problem was that he was so focused on how to prove that he could be an Alpha that he wasn’t paying attention to the fact that a good alpha listens to his pack and especially to the woman that he wants as a mate. He was a bit of a control freak and almost didn’t realize he was pushing Ana away but later it started to become clear that Connor was motivated by fear and insecurity. He genuinely cared about what happened to Ana and her pack and was scared he wasn’t going to be enough to protect them once it was revealed that they had more than just a rival pack as enemies. I liked him even with his stubborn ways.

With Alpha Instinct being the first book in the Moon Shifter series there were plenty of supporting characters to meet and I really enjoyed them all. Ana’s pack was an interesting mix of personalities since some of the females were Beta wolves and some were Alpha. The combination really made the pack dynamic work and the way Reus portrayed the beta wolves was great. They weren’t as physically strong as their alpha counterparts but they were what essentially brought the pack together with their kindness and intelligence.

The pacing and plot of Alpha Instinct kept me intrigued and entertained from start to finish and I loved how the author kept some things secret until the very last moment, it added to the suspense and was part of what made the book work for me. I don’t like knowing all the answers right away.

Final Verdict: Definitely a strong, interesting start to the series. Hopefully I’ll be able to feature the rest of the series as part of Throwback Thursday Reviews.

Alpha Instinct Moon Shifter Series Katie Reus Books Reviews

Three different werewolf packs, each with its own issues, struggle to survive in a rural town. Add to this a serial killer who hates shifters, blindly blaming them for his father’s death, and you have a recipe for one heck of a thriller here. One Alpha, Taggart, is brutal, evil, and self-serving; he has his pack dealing in the drug trade, having built a crystal meth lab on his pack’s lands. Ana, the temporary pack leader for her pack due to the sudden and recent demise of all pack males and all pregnant females, is struggling with the need to find a new pack Alpha. Taggart, the slimy devil, wants her and her pack in the worst way and she is definitely not interested in him, as crazy as he behaves. Connor and his brother Liam lead a warrior pack with few females, and Connor and Ana have history and chemistry!
An antiparanomal league that wants all non-humans and non-human sympathizers dead helps to keep the reader unsure of where the next threat is coming. Quite a great read!
Alpha Instinct had everything I should have loved in a paranormal book. It was a decent read and a good introduction to a new paranormal world, but it didn’t blow me away like I expected it to.

Ana was holding it together as best she could after all the males and the pregnant women in her pack died from a mysterious poisoning. The deaths left the pack with no true leadership, because as strong as Ana was, she was no alpha. Her pack was vulnerable and the vultures, well wolves really, were already circling. Connor had lived with Ana’s pack decades before, but left under mysterious circumstances leaving a broken-hearted Ana behind. He and his pack of alpha male warriors show up at just the right time, as Ana was being assaulted by a neighboring alpha.

As much as I wanted to like Connor, he never really impressed me. At first, he came on too strong, demanding Ana become his mate, but at the same time, he was unwilling to share everything with her. He wouldn’t tell her why he left, and he was constantly withholding important information with his reason being that “he was alpha now”. Although the chemistry between Connor and Ana was palpable, their communication issues lasted almost to the end of the story. Because of this, I never really bought into them being a bonded couple.

The good news is, there was lots of action going on to distract me from the relationship issues between Connor and Ana. Maybe a bit too much action, which coming from me is saying a lot. First, there was the issue of who was targeting the pack with the poisonings. Then there was Taggart, the alpha from the neighboring pack who was into some seriously shady things and wanted Ana and her pack for his own crazy plans. Then there was the anti-shifter people causing havoc with random assaults and attempted kidnappings. All things that usually make my action-loving heart soar, but with so many things happening at once, it was hard to concentrate. Plus, the bad guys were ridiculously bad, almost comically so, which never works for me.

Alpha Instinct had some great bones to it with characters I want to know more about. My main problem was with so much going on, I just couldn’t settle into the story. I love some of Katie Reus’ later books, so I may return to this series at some point to see if it ever settled and grew into a more well-rounded story.
