Elizabeth/Juliette is just creepy and out of her mind. It's like watching a trainwreck in slow motion. She is just cold and soul dead with no sympathic qualities. Even with disturbed, vicious main characters, they need to be engaging and have some redeeming quality to make me care about their point of view in the story. I never found Elizabeth anything other than awful.

The book opens with a very bad thing that, I guess, was supposed to establish the groundwork for why she is a sociopath. It does explain some of her crazy, but I'm not a fan of the flashback info dump technique and this book does it often. It just takes you out of any building tension in the plot.

This book is not bad by any means, but it just never felt smooth and moved slowly for me. I never found a reason to care about Elizabeth or feel anything other than pity for Nathan. I actually stopped halfway through and read an entire second novel before wanting to return to The Perfect Girlfriend. I'm sure other folks will love this, but it just wasn't for me.

This novel is being touted as THE debut psychological thriller of 2019 & it delivers. If you think you have seen obsessive relationships before, "Fatal Attraction" always comes to mind, nothing will prepare you for Juliette. She only dated Nate for 6 months and he ended things because there just wasn't a love connection. Unfortunately for Nate, Juliette doesn't give up that easily. It starts with her getting a job at the same airlines he works at and then subtly inserting herself into his life. When an innocent night of stop-over in Las Vegas finds them going to the infamous Wedding Chapel, Nate will have no clue as to what Juliette will do next after their 'drunken wedding' is official. This novel never becomes predictable and when you peel back the layers of Juliette's psyche and understand how long this plot to ensnare Nate has been broiling in her mind you will truly be frightened to ever casually date again!
This book unfolds so perfectly that it just sucks you in and you want to keep reading to see what will happen next. I started it on the weekend and didn't get anything done because I had to keep reading this until I got to the end. And, honestly, even at the end I wasn't ready for it to be over. I still want to know what will happen next!

I remember seeing "Fatal Attraction" decades ago and being shocked. But Juliette could give lessons to Fatal Attraction's Alex because she always has a plan and she has the patience to play the long game. Her boyfriend broke up with her and she has a plan to get him back. At first she is just a little creepy obsessive but as the book unfolds, the whole twisted story and the lengths to which she will go to reach her goals just keep growing.

Sometimes I have a hard time with first person narration because the narrator's "voice" doesn't come through well or the story needs a third person perspective. In this book Juliette's inner monologue and perspective are the entirety of the book and they work perfectly.

I enjoyed this one a lot.
My reading kind of dropped off over the holidays. The TBR pile is teetering, but I've seen so many teasers about Karen Hamilton's debut novel, The Perfect Girlfriend, that I decided to jump it to the front of the queue. And I pretty much finished it in a day.....

Let me introduce you to Juliette....

"Waiting. That's what I do, a lot of waiting. And thinking...." She's thinking (obsessively) about her ex boyfriend Nate.

"I hope he appreciates the lengths I've gone to, just to save us - everything will fall into place." What has she done? Taken a job that puts her into Nate's world. And Nate is not the only one in her sights. "Revenge is a dish best served cold, and mine is going to be frozen."

Oh my gosh, Juliette's thinking is so...so...off. She has a long term plan that will get her what she wants and in her eyes, what she deserves. And the path she maps to that end is frightening. Just when I thought Juliette couldn't possibly do any else, she does. I applaud Hamilton's plotting. I adore not being able to predict where a story is going to go. And with Juliette, there was no predicting. What a character! There were also two twists that I didn't anticipate and that I thought were quite clever.

I leave you with one last piece of advice from Juliette...

"If you love someone, set them free. If they come back, they're yours. If they don't, make them."

Karen herself worked for many years as a flight attendant and her descriptions and settings reflect that. I'm hoping Juliette isn't drawn from reality! Psychological suspense fans, put this one on your list for sure!
I usually get as many books for my Mom as I can. She loves to read and I mean she LOVES to read. Usually a book a day or day and half. She loves romance novels so when I noticed that this book book stated that "you've never read a love story as twisted as this", I got it for her thinking it was a love story. It is a love story However it is more of a suspense and that is on me. Mom said the book was OK, but remember she loves a good romance novel. This book was read in a couple of days over the holidays. The story line and the writing style did keep her reading. She will let me know when its a bad book but I never got this comment from her.

I never tell about the book itself as I DO NOT want to spoil anything for another reader. Mom may give me a synopsis about the book but I never talk about the story line. Hate it when someone tells me something about the story that occurs 3/4 the way thru a book or a reviewer tells me they do finally get married. I don’t want you spoiling my reading and I do not want to spoil your reading when it comes to a good book. I figure it you are wanting to know a little about the story, you can read the synopsis that and the author gives you.

She is going to tell the ladies at her Beauty Shop Book Group about this book as it was worth reading, it is just more of a suspense novel than an all out romance. Still a good read.
