The world of Thurr is in chaos. The realms of men are in a perpetual state of war. Battle mages and seemingly-immortal champions, blessed by the gods, fight for resources, and to defend their lands. The great human kingdom of Valdadore faces daily raids by neighboring orcs, trolls, and goblins. Rumors of giants in the mountain passes are whispered as if to speak them aloud would bring trouble.
Seth is torn. He'd never had grand dreams of being a fire mage, a cleric, a mighty paladin of some god whose name he didn't know, or even a common soldier in Valdadore's armies. He'd never even left his home. But he was coming of age, and The Choosing ceremony was upon him. In days he'd be little better than a slave to the kingdom—chosen into a role of service for no less than five years.
At least he wasn't alone. Together with his twin, Garret, he'd travel to Valdadore for a fate neither of them was prepared for. Facing troubles on their quest to the castle, Seth notices a strange new trend in his life. Time after time, strange circumstances befall him in what others might call a coincidence, but Seth knows something else is amiss.
Learning his past is all a lie, Seth begins to fear more for his future as a dark goddess vies for his service to her cause. Seth's loyalties and responsibilities begin to stack up as he makes friends and allies and even falls in love, but with The Choosing ceremony growing ever nearer, will he be forced to flee the kingdom into a life of exile, or choose to serve the goddess who swears that only through her will he find peace?

First and foremost, I am an avid reader of fantasy and enjoy reading pretty much anything I can get my hands on provided the first few pages can grasp my attention. This Author did just that in the prologue to this book, presenting not only an acceptable plot but gave enough of a description without giving anything away that it left me questioning the entire time and kept me reading. THAT is exactly what good plot is about. The reason that I give it three of five stars is the manner in which it continued from there. Toward the begining of the book and through toward the end, each time a daunting situation presented itself, something would fall into the lap of the group that would 'save' the day. When faced with hunger, they are given not only a substantial amount of food, but a large sum of money which allows them to be 'worry free' through the rest of the book.
My second issue is with overall Charachter development. 'What you see is what you get.' There was little to no charachter development. Right at the begining when each Charachter is presented and you learn his initial personality, it does little to change through the novel, and the Author can be very repetative with some of his descriptions.
Now, all that being said, I have just read this book and will be purchasing the next one. Despite its flaws, this books plot was fantastic and shows an imagination I look forward to continuing. I also firmly believe that, as this is by the Author's own omission, a first attempt at writing, that he will likely get much better as time progresses.

The Choosing Age of the Gods The Blood and Brotherhood Saga Book 1 eBook Jeremy Laszlo Reviews
This was a great read. I deliberaely stopped the first night at the half-way mark, to allow the enjoyment of the story to continue another night. There were few typos or other errors, always nice. The author is an exquisite storyteller and weaves a web drawing the reader in to the point that even if one could walk away, one wouldn't.
That said, he is expensive and unless my local public library carries his works, I'll never get to finish this wonderful series. Even so, if your budget allows for literature expenditures, this series would be a wonderful thing to spend a week enjoying.,
The Choosing is just the first installment of a three book saga. I found myself skipping pages that were filled with minutia that had little bearing on the story. This is a personal preference … I like the writing to be tight enough that those long, descriptive passages are unnecessary. The story is a good one. The Choosing is a selection process whereby citizens of a certain age appear at a ceremony that determines in what roles they are to serve their kingdom. Those who possess magic and the power of healing are separated from those who will serve as soldiers and enter the knighthood. There is also a tender love story here that adds interest to the story of their travels.

The journey, the coming of age, the rites of passage, the damsels in distress (one of them is a god), and a love story. The concepts and basic storyline were very good, and the author writes well. The world and the characters are well developed. The author keeps various fantasy races in line with what fantasy readers have come to expect.
Where this book lost a star was in prolonged and overly repetitive descriptions. When a love scene is described kiss by kiss, movement by movement, breath by breath for screen after screen I skim just to find the end of it. I do the same when a battle scene is described movement by movement, blow by blow, step by step, and then from multiple perspectives (though never told in the first person). And how many descriptions of thong underwear did we really need?
If you like those sorts of things, they're in there. If you're not into those sorts of things, there's still plenty of story in between them.
Don't let this cover fool you. Thankfully, it was not the cover when I downloaded, or I may have missed out on a wonderfully written journey. This journey centers around Seth and Garrett, twins who must venture to the "choosing" when they turn 18. The people they encounter and the vivid scenarios really made you feel like part of the trip. The healer who travels with them and becomes a friend, and the girl they rescue who steals the heart of one of the twins only adds to this endearing dynamic. It's a story of family, of love and mystery. I loved the author's take on the God's as well and how their will plays out, and how every scenario is one that can be somehow applied to everyday life. Though it reads like a historical story, it has a dystopian edge with a little paranormal thrown in. Unique and compelling. Now that the choosing is over, I look forward to what they have "Chosen" and what dark force lurks on the horizon.
What a fantastic fast paced read! I loved how you see the characters grow along the way to the "Choosing". Especially Ashton who had some healing skills and was able to heal a heart and lung of one of his fellow traveling companions when they are attacked by a dwarf. The four main characters of Garrett, Seth, Ashton and Sara all come together to travel to The Choosing. Garrett wants to be in the army, Ashton who already shows some healing skills wants to be with the healers. Seth decides he doesn't really want to choose any particular religion or service shows a talent towards magic and is placed with the Gary robes, the protectors. He is more than happy when Sara who he loves is placed with him, though not for magic purposes, but for her memory, writing and reading skills. I can't wait to read the second book in this trilogy and would definitely recommend it to those who like fast paced books.
