The Wife Before Me A twisty gripping psychological thriller eBook Laura Elliot

This book was an intriguing as it was gripping. Mostly though, it was a dark, disturbing read. It will appeal to those who live in the shadow of their spouse’s former partner. It will also serve as a warning for those who enter relationships too quickly, especially when they are vulnerable.
We are introduced early in the story to a distraught Amelia. She is the first wife of Nicholas, a handsome and confident man who seems to be perfect in every way on the surface. Soon after this, we meet Elena who meets Nicholas at her mother’s funeral. Elena finds that she is attracted to him and the manner in which he woos her is strategic, planned and controlled by Nicholas who never talks about his life with Amelia. He also reacts badly whenever Elena raises the topic of his deceased wife. It is difficult for Elena to accept that Nicholas is over Amelia when he continues to exhibit photographs of his former spouse in what he claims is his home, and there are traces of her in the master bedroom, make-up clothing etc. It doesn’t take long for Nicholas to show his over-bearing OCD personality and abusive ways.
The story is .told from the perspective of both Elena and Amelia interspersed with details about Nicholas’ parents and colleagues and friends of both the women in his life. At times I was screaming for both women to retaliate and teach Nicholas a lesson he would never forget for the verbal and physical abuse he inflicted on them and had to repeatedly remind myself that many women in abusive relationships remain at the table when love is no longer being served.

The book is written in 3 parts and more than anything is testament to the lines, never judge a book by its cover, the leopard never changes his spots and every dog has his day.

Shocking secrets, lies and betrayal in the book to the final twists and turns at the end, make this a gripping read. The inclusion of what might be termed unexplainable forces made this story different and interesting.

The Wife Before Me A twisty gripping psychological thriller eBook Laura Elliot Reviews

It definitely kept me reading.. Some of the answers were fairly easy to guess at, but I felt like I was living the story with the main characters. A few editing mistakes but not enough to diminish the enjoyment. Toward the end of the book, Kayla is referred to as Layla. That typo should definitely have been caught. Still, I recommend it highly.
When Elena meets Nicholas at her mother's funeral she isn't looking for a man. Deeply depressed and ashamed that her mother never disclosed just how ill she was, Elena is also recovering from the loss of her boyfriend and their baby. Accepting Nicholas's dinner invitation after he helps settle her mother's affairs, Elena finds her twin in tragedy and a man who listens. Two years earlier his wife, Amelia, was lost in the ocean when her skidded off a pier. Unable to marry, the two commit themselves to each other and Elena moved into the house Nicholas shared with Amelia, a house Nicholas will not permit Elena to change. Feeling as if she's living another woman's life, Elena finds looses herself as Nicholas becomes more controlling. Can Elena Dave herself and her children?
The Wife before me is as twisty as the book description promised with a sell paced plotlines and interesting characters. Worth a weekend read so you can finish it in on sitting.
Nicholas is a heartless psychopath, wife-beater & murderer. His patterns of abuse & violence are dominant & prevalent ALL throughout the book. His fury, rage & brutality escalate/intensify but the suspense does not. The big reveal is predictable. And, the supernatural aspect is hokey. It came across as silly & laughable. I'm sure, that wasn't the author's intent. It's SO poorly done, it should not have been attempted.
Did not like this book— too long near the end— as if pages were added that were not needed just to take up space— skimmed most of the end chapters.
This could have been a fabulous book but....I rated is 4 because it was a real page turner. Couldn't put it down. I agree with other reviews who commented that they thought it would never end. The end was too drawn out. I lost sympathy for one of the main characters who couldn't figure out how to stop the violence and did nothing to try to stop it. Overall it was worth the read.
While I absolutely loved the attention to the subject of abuse and the bravery to obtain freedom from it that the women displayed, the believability in the final scenes were to fantastic. Sometimes in trying to bring a conclusion to a story the finale is overdone. I enjoyed it until the end. One other thing that I thought was very good, though, was the fleshing out of the main characters. Overall it was very captivating.
With a nod to "Rebecca", the story and the atmosphere, Laura E. weaves a tale of love,deception-illusion and madness. The over wrought writing ,is perfect for this spellbinding tale,.It reads like A new take on the old gothic novels .The present tense and the past tense merge seamlessly. I read thru the night, not willing to sleep until the end, and a good, satisfying end it was .
