An Absolutely Remarkable Thing A Novel eBook Hank Green Reviews

In the first few chapters, I became concerned that perhaps I had immersed myself in a positive feedback bubble that had only exposed me to what was beginning to seem to be overpositive reviews of Hank Green's debut novel. That concern faded away as the story and characters became more complex and as the genuinely perplexing mystery thickened. For anyone who follows Green, his standard talking points are almost obtusely clear and abundant, making up much of what is really the substance of the book. Those points are valuable and strong on their own merit, though, so a reader less immersed in the Green brother's world would find a unique and poignant commentary on modern digital society.
If you love humanity, this book will validate that. If you're skeptical about humanity, this book may reassure you that all is not lost.
I bought the book because I like a lot of Hank Green's other work and wanted to support him in this new endeavor. I'm so glad I did. It might not enter the canon of great literature, but if you read it and don't find yourself thinking seriously about where you would fit in April May's world, you should go back to the beginning.
I was sort of worried about this book. I like Hank, I wanted it to be good, but I remain skeptical of books by youtubers. I shouldn't have been. I read it all the way through today and was enthralled the whole time. The story is genuinely interesting. ( KNOCK KNOCK WHERE IS MY SEQUEL) April was a complex character that I sympathized with and disagreed with in almost equal measure. She came across completely human. Which was kinda the goal, right? The themes explored include fame, the way we tend to pay attention to the people who scream the loudest, how dangerous fear can be, and giant space men, and are so so relevant and clearly told by someone with an inside perspective. Someone who has given it a lot of thought. It's a book that has had, and I think will continue to have, an effect on my worldview. In some ways it confirmed things I already thought, but I think the things it confirmed were fairly empathetic views, which I can't see as a bad thing. The supporting cast wasn't particularly fleshed out, but I think that's okay. Besides, there's more books coming! Also it was pretty funny? and I enjoyed it a lot? and I want to read more of it?
This book grabbed my attention and didn't let go until I finished the whole thing in one day. Highly recommended. A mediation on fame and power and humanity wrapped in a thrilling, engrossing shell. Warning you will want the next one right away. And it does have some strong language, but I didn't feel it was excessive. YMMV
This book is what happens when a YouTube star makes a clumsy attempt at literary achievement. This is the least bookish book I've ever read in my life. Its prose is shallow, conversational, and trendy. It reads like a Twitter post, but without the 280-character cap. You fall into the plot without any preamble (certainly without any attempt at context or character development). April May is young and fun, but lacks the depth of character you'd find in a typical protagonist. The plot jumps around, but certain threads of it are readable. Be prepared, however, to want to close every social media account you have after reading this book. April May will give you so many details about her social media (truly, right down to her very password, which is donkeyfart - is that supposed to be cute?) that you'll never want to see an inbox again.
I just read this straight through from the moment it arrived 11 hours ago. An Absolutely Remarkable Thing was suspenseful, gripping and insightful. On several occasions I actually exclaimed aloud because it was so tense and surprising. I've been watching Hank (and John's) videos for 10 years (since about halfway through the first year of Brootherhood 2.0) and I got really emotional (see excited, hopeful) when I heard Hank was releasing a book. I've been around on their channel as Hank has risen through tiers of fame and knew my long time admiration for his work would be resilient should I dislike his first book. I'm really just so happy for Hank, though, because it was so good and I loved it. I saw so much of Hank in this book and I think those familiar with his work will feel the same. Congratulations, Hank. ♡
I'm about 30% through and the book is exhausting. I read before bed and it's so fast-paced that it wires me. That is good for most books, and normally I would just read it at a different time. But this one not only feels as though I'm sticking my finger in a light socket. It also feels wormy, as if something rotten is gradually burrowing into my skin and the only way to stop it is to stop reading. That sounds bizarre, since this is not horror or slasher genre. Usually, I am drawn to science fiction, especially slightly creepy science fiction. This is more basic. This deals with the stink of pride, which is scarier than aliens to me. Well done, Hank. Maybe I can push through. You have done something remarkable.
